ATTENTION: Due to a large upcoming cabinet delivery, preparatory blockages, and subsequent shifts, the United States National Herbarium will be closed to visitors from 1 April to 31 May, 2026. During this time, a moratorium on most collections activities (e.g., loans, borrows, acquisitions, destructive sampling, specimen returns) will also be in effect. If you have any questions, please email our resource account (USNH@si.edu).
NOTE: At this time, the United States National Herbarium is unable to accept the unsolicited donation or exchange of specimens. Should you be interested in donating or exchanging specimens, please email our resource account (USNH@si.edu) prior to initiating shipment. Specimens received without prior authorization may be retained, returned, or disposed of, at our sole discretion.
The United States National Herbarium (US) maintains a world-class research collection of all major groups of land plants (bryophytes, ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), as well as algae (especially marine algae and diatoms) and lichens. Our vast collections of over 5 million specimens are accessible, both online and in person, to anyone with a relevant research question. Our Type Herbarium is one of the largest in the world. Visiting researchers include botanists, artists, historians, and students.
